Hands-On Activities & Workshops

We offer 30-60min workshops where students will learn exciting aspects about STEM through hands-on activities. A trainee or researcher will guide youth through the activity and encourage them to think like a scientist. Activities can be run virtually or in-person and can range in difficulty and length. For instance, youth can learn about Hypothesis Testing, Neurons or building Robotics in short session. Or they can be involved in a larger workshop series where they are presented with a problem and spend several sessions with scientists brainstorming solutions.

Here are some examples of our Workshop offerings:

  • Hands-On STEM Activities for Youth (K-8)

We offer a range of activities for various ages, all with a STEM focus e.g., creating a pipecleaner neuron or building a heart valve or hand model. Our volunteers would facilitate the hands-on element while discussing their work at UHN, giving students a chance to start thinking about how activities they enjoy could translate to future careers and areas of study. We provide all required activity supplies.

  • Career Development Workshops (14+)

We offer a range of career development programming for youth. Our volunteers facilitate sessions or panels that discuss a STEM career path. These can be general STEM information sessions (e.g., What can you do with a science degree, Choosing a STEM degree) or interactive STEM Panels (e.g., Careers in Science - Biology Pathways, Careers in Engineering/Math).

  • Dr. Lothar Lilge's UHN Laser Program

In partnership with STAO, we provide laser kits and lessons for educators and community leaders to use in classrooms/groups. Students get to learn about concepts like wavelengths, absorption, oxygenation and endoscopes using lasers certified for the classroom. These topics are then related to how the clinical diagnosis and therapeutics processes occur in healthcare.
